UC Davis’ Josette Lewis shared the role of science and technology in meeting the challenge of climate change for agriculture for this panel discussion, which was featured among the events at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference of the Parties (COP-22).
The discussion focused on climate-smart agriculture (CSA) and the U.S. government's leadership in adapting this sector to climate impacts and reducing its emissions in the U.S. and for food security abroad. Part of it covered the U.S. Feed the Future Initiative, for which UC Davis has housed the most Innovation Labs of any university.
Faculty members Jan Hopmans, William Horwath and Thomas Rost were engaging in side events at the talks to advance a partnership between UC Davis and the Moroccan fertilizer company, OCP Group, for developing climate-smart practices—from fertilizer to soil and water management—to benefit African farmers. Lewis also spoke at a separate side event on CSA and climate challenges in California.
UC Davis has been a member of the Global Alliance for CSA since the first scientific conference in 2011, having also hosted the 2013 and co-sponsored the 2015 conferences.
