Supporting UC Davis’ top nutrition researchers

As the room filled, attendees lined the walls and eventually the entranceway. They came to hear about stunting, wasting and obesity in children and how new global nutrition goals are tackling these and other major nutrition challenges for mothers, infants and young children.

The World Food Center supported the UC Davis Department of Nutrition’s Program in International and Community Nutrition in a session focusing on strategies to address the 2025 World Health Organization global targets for maternal, infant and young child nutrition at the 2016 Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH). More than 200 attended the panel that discussed global progress and intervention strategies for achieving the six related targets including education in child stunting, low birth weight and child wasting; prevention of childhood obesity; reduction in anemia among women of reproductive age; and integration of nutrition, WASH.  

From UC Davis, Professors Kathryn Dewey and Christine Stewart presented, joined by leading nutrition scholars Juan Rivera, director of the nutrition and health center at the Instituto Nacional de Salud Publica in Mexico, and Rebecca Stoltzfus, a global health professor at Cornell University. The session was moderated by Margaret Bentley, director of the Institute for Global Health and Infectious Diseases at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.  

The CUGH annual conference is designed to bring together individuals from diverse fields to promote interdisciplinary science and learning. CUGH’s annual conference is the preeminent event for global health networking, career development and knowledge sharing. This year’s conference was held in San Francisco on April 8 - 11.
