WFC partners in Farm-to-Fork movement

The World Food Center has partnered recently with Sacramento's Farm-to-Fork organizers to present a UC Davis panel discussion on "Health Soils for a Healthy Life." The event is one example of the Center's goal to bridge the gap between nutrition and agriculture by connecting UC Davis and the region to  global dialogues and to the businesses that exist between the farm and the fork. 

Daphne Miller, a medical doctor and author of Farmacology, opened the discussion with a keynote speech on her adventures in learning about micronutrients in the soil how they deeply affect the human gut microbiome. Following Miller's talk, Tom Tomich, director of the Agricultural Sustainability Institute, led an open discussion with nutrition professor Bruce German and soil microbiologist Kate Scow—all are UC Davis faculty members.

The event coincided with Sacramento's Farm-to-Fork week, which celebrates the capital's geographical and historical connection to one of the largest agricultural economies in the world. Coinciding with the speaking event was World Food Day, a time when the nations around the world celebrate the day the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) was established and renew pledges to end hunger and malnutrition. The FAO declared 2015 the "International Year of Soils: Healthy Soils for a Healthy Life."

The speaker series was in partnership with the California Rice Commission, the Food Literacy Center and Valley Vision.
