Shawn Baker speaks on nutrition and Africa at UC Davis

Shawn Baker is the director of the Nutrition Team at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. He leads the foundation’s efforts to ensure that women and children receive the nutrition they need for healthy growth and development. Shawn Baker spent much of his professional career in West Africa and will draw from these experiences as he discusses how the Gates Foundation is leveraging agriculture for improved nutrition and prosperity.

Following the seminar, a panel of UC Davis experts will add their perspectives to how the campus is working at the intersection of agriculture and nutrition in developing regions of the world.

In Sub-Saharan Africa, agricultural labor accounts for the majority of the workforce. Many of these farming households survive on diets that fail to meet their nutritional needs. Addressing this challenge begins with nutrition-sensitive agriculture, which brings an integrative approach throughout the value chain.
